Whitehaven Coal announced that the NSW Planning Assessment Commission has determined to approve the Company's Tarrawonga Coal Mine Expansion Project in north west NSW, subject to a series of stringent conditions. The project is now awaiting approval from the Federal Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water Population and Communities. The Tarrawonga mine currently has consent to extract 16.4Mt of coal, at a rate of up to 2Mtpa, until 2017. Under the expansion project the Company is seeking to expand the mine to the east of the approved mining area, increase the production rate from 2Mt of coal per year to 3Mt of coal a year and extend the project life to 2030.
