MLC has unveiled a new consulting service for ultra-high net worth (UHNW) clients and smaller institutional investors, providing tailored investment strategies for wealth protection.

The consulting service, Portfolio Solutions, will target clients who have moved beyond the accumulation phase of their wealth strategy.

"Much of the investment advice and product capability currently available in Australia for individual investors is aimed at catering for the accumulation phase of the wealth cycle," MLC investment strategist and Portfolio Solutions team leader Michael Karagianis said.

"For many UHNW clients, however, wealth accumulation is not a priority; they have been able to generate wealth successfully from their own activities.

"We find many UHNW clients are seeking solutions to ensure the real value of existing wealth is protected over time, so it may generate enough income to keep pace with inflation and maintain their lifestyle into, and through, retirement."

With market volatility expected to continue through 2013, the consulting service will look to a diversified portfolio of credit, equity income and absolute return strategies, alongside traditional safe assets such as term deposits, to generate income.

The service will also provide stress testing and risk analysis of an investor's portfolio to weather difficult conditions.

"Investors can develop a much better understanding as to the nature of the risks they are exposed to within their current portfolio and how, in many cases, some straightforward changes to the structure of the portfolio can dramatically improve the potential outcome across a wide range of possible investment scenarios," Karagianis said.

"The Portfolio Solutions team works with aligned advisers to provide their clients with an asset allocation blueprint they can follow to maximise the chance of achieving their investment objectives, given the ongoing market uncertainty we anticipate."

The availability of Portfolio Solutions is limited to individual and institutional investors with more than $3 million in investable assets and is already available through MLC-aligned and NAB Private Wealth advisers.
