VeriSign is the registry operator for the .com, .net, .name, and .cc generic top-level domains, or gTLDs, and provides the back-end systems for the .edu TLD. The firm generates revenue via annual fees collected for every renewing and new domain in Verisign’s registries. The .com and .net gTLDs are two of the largest domains in the world, and VeriSign has been designated as the authoritative registry operator and wholesaler for them under agreements with the US Department of Commerce and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which are subject to renewal every six years.
